Piazza Adriana · Rome

Everything begins at the end of the street.

Piazza Adriana runs along the back of the gardens of Castel Sant’Angelo, at the point where the Prati grid meets the older lanes of Borgo. It is a residential square rather than a route through: from here you walk to the castle, cross the river into the historic centre, or turn the other way into a neighbourhood that goes about its own business.

The first five minutes

Piazza Cavour, with the gardens, the great white bulk of the Palazzo di Giustizia — home to the Court of Cassation — and the wine shop under its arcades, is two minutes away. Castel Sant’Angelo is five, and from the bridge in front of it the dome of St Peter’s closes the view — it is the photograph everyone takes, and it is round the corner.

The difference shows in the evening, when the streets around the monuments empty out and the places here fill with the people who live nearby.

Rome on foot

Cross the river and Piazza Navona is thirteen minutes away, the Pantheon seventeen, Piazza del Popolo the same. Go the other way and St Peter’s Square is sixteen minutes, the Vatican Museums twenty. None of it needs the metro, a taxi or a plan.

When you need to go further

Lepanto station on Metro A is thirteen minutes away and Ottaviano sixteen: one line, no changes, and everything else in Rome. The airport coach from Fiumicino stops on Via Crescenzio, four minutes from the door, and we can arrange a private transfer when you would rather not think about any of it.
